The Governing Body of Suomenlinna launches a project to investigate the effects of climate change on built cultural heritage

Together with the project partners, the Governing Body of Suomenlinna has launched a development project focused on studying the effects of climate change on built cultural heritage. The method will be made publicly available.

In April, the Governing Body of Suomenlinna launched a three-year development project co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) focused on mapping the effects of climate change on built cultural heritage. The project is part of the Innovation and Skills in Finland 2021–2017 programme.

The project “Developing methodology for monitoring the effects of climate change on cultural heritage sites“ is implemented by the Governing Body of Suomenlinna. Co-implementers include the Alvar Aalto Foundation, the Finnish Heritage Agency and Oulu School of Architecture. The cooperation allows the project to combine expertise and insights from different fields, enabling a multidimensional approach.

Innovative research and development

The method developed in the project allows versatile monitoring of the effects of climate change on different cultural heritage sites. The research takes into account both traditional and modern construction methods and materials, and its results will prove invaluable in the protection and restoration of built cultural heritage.

“The project responds to the need in the cultural heritage field to develop a common monitoring method and indicators for identifying the effects of climate change. The new information will enable us to implement adaptation measures in a targeted and timely manner. We have excellent partners and a good team. The joint development is inspiring,” says Project Coordinator Juha Rajaharju.

The project is also aimed at assembling a network of experts focused on the identification of climate risks and the sharing of related information. This network will act as a resource for cultural heritage sector operators and help them adapt to the challenges posed by climate change.
The progress of the project can be monitored on the website of the Governing Body of Suomenlinna https://www.slhk.fi/hankkeet/kulttuuriperinto-ja-ilmastonmuutos/
