Greater landscape
World Heritage Sites have a buffer zone as an added layer of protection to protect their setting and landscape values. The views surrounding the fortress islands and the urban marine environment are called Suomenlinna’s greater landscape.
The open sea off the coast of Suomenlinna used to play an integral role in the operation of Suomenlinna’s naval base. The geographical location of the fortress was chosen in the 18th century on the basis of the well-protected waters off the coast of Helsinki’s Kruunuvuori district and the group of islands that formed a sheltered area between them. This was a good place for a well-fortified dry dock (Susisaari). The ships of the archipelago fleet left the dock and entered the open sea through the Tykistölahti and Kustaanmiekka straits.
